Heaven’s Wager
Ok, since I don’t quite feel ready for going to bed, and the only decent thing on cable TV is Tom Bosley selling something I don’t need (Yes I miss DVR at the moment), I have decided to start reviewing a book whenever I finish reading it. “Heaven’s Wager” was one of Ted Dekker’s initial novels. The novel was written quite differently from his later books that I’ve enjoyed. The Circle Trilogy and Saint series utilize a distinctly different style. Whereas they remain fairly light-hearted and are injected with the occasional humor this older book takes on a much more depressing tone bordering (And nearly passing until the conclusion) hopeless despair. For some reason though this fact only adds to the power of the message inside the book by dragging the reader through a vast array of emotions and then showing how empty feeling they all really are without the One who invented them to begin with. For me to actually say I enjoyed this book even with the gloom that resides within is saying quite a bit. I am not a fan of overly serious and dark books (In other words I’m not emo) but this left me feeling like while situations don’t always make sense to us they do to The Lord. Of course I also liked the slight tech view Dekker put this through
Oh by the way, the story does end on a very high-note filled with hope. Right now I can’t wait until I get my hands on the second in the “Martyr’s Song” series!
